Evergreens
aren’t that, really. They change:
spring’s emerald tips age to summer’s forest green,
then freeze to ebony each wintertime.
Trees
transform in a rhythm that’s
seasonal.

Rivers
respond to underlying forces. They tumble
as rapids or meander as streams,
bend as terrain determines.
Water
moves forward, adapting and
altering.

A girl
stands on granite, observing the landscape
absorbing these elements:
their living curriculum, their lessons worth learning.
She
finds her foundations in
Canada.
